NC renewable-energy sector holds promise, faces challenges

About 160 Charlotte-area people working in or providing services for the renewable-energy industry crowded into a conference room at Piedmont Natural Gas’headquarters Wednesday afternoon to talk about financing projects in their industry. And they got an earful.

Energy projects — particularly in solar, landfill waste and energy efficiency — are thriving for now. But the industry faces a series of challenges. Federal tax incentives for wind development expire this year. State tax incentives for all renewables are scheduled to end in 2015. And the N.C. General Assembly appears ready to consider curbing or eliminating the 2007 renewable energy portfolio standard law that gave the N.C. industry a leg up over other states in the Southeast… Read more
