NC renewable-energy sector holds promise, faces challenges

About 160 Charlotte-area people working in or providing services for the renewable-energy industry crowded into a conference room at Piedmont Natural Gas’headquarters Wednesday afternoon to talk about financing projects in their industry. And they got an earful.

Energy projects — particularly in solar, landfill waste and energy efficiency — are thriving for now. But the industry faces a series of challenges. Federal tax incentives for wind development expire this year. State tax incentives for all renewables are scheduled to end in 2015. And the N.C.
