Wind energy drives massive advances in UKs quest for sustainable energy

Official statistics have today shown a clear year-on-year increase in renewable energy production in the UK – with output rises in wind, hydro, solar and bioenergy generation.

“Alongside a 36% increase in renewables capacity in the last 12 months, this shows that the UK is powering forward on clean and secure energy and is clearly a very attractive place to invest,” says Energy Minister Charles Hendry.

RenewableUK, the trade and professional body for the wind, wave & tidal industries, has welcomed the publication of the Government statistics which show that the UK’s wind fleet produced over 50% more electricity in the first quarter of 2012 compared to the same period last year.

This corresponds to an output of 5,044 gigawatt-hours – equivalent to the demand of over a fifth of the homes in the UK.
